MUSE
A new treatment for erectile dysfunction is MUSE (Medicated Urethral System for Erections). This is approved for use in Canada. The pellet is Prostaglandin and it is deposited into the penis via the urethra (urine tube). There are 3 doses: 250 mg, 500 mg and 1,000 mg. MUSE has a success rate of 60%. It is an easy method of treatment for those who do not wish to use injections.

We have used MUSE in a number of different situations. Those patients who want to stop using intracorporal penile injections might try MUSE. It has had some success after Radical Prostatectomy and we're even trying it in combination with VIAGRA. It's easy to use but is not for everyone.
Caverject (injectable prostaglandin E1)
One of the best treatments for erectile dysfunction is intracorporal injections (ICI). These are injections into the erectile tissue of the penis and cause smooth muscle relaxation. Increased blood flow results with an erection following soon after. This particular treatment has been used for 15 years and is very effective.
Caverject is a medication used for ICI. It contains Prostaglandin E1 which is similar to the prostaglandin hormone in our bodies, allowing for smooth muscle relaxation and increased blood flow to the penis. Erections occur between 5-15 minutes after an injection. This medication does not need to be stored in the refrigerator as many other medications do. It is the most effective medication available but because it requires a penile injection, it is not for everyone.
Hormone Replacement Therapy
For those men who have a deficiency in hormones such as testosterone, hormone replacement therapy may be prescribed. This may improve desire or libido, but not necessarily erections. Andriol is the most commonly prescribed oral testosterone.
Tension Rings
Are used for men who are able to obtain a good erection but who are unable to maintain it. The rubber rings are applied to the base of the penis after obtaining the erection. This prevents any leakage of blood from the penis. Rings are also used in combination with other treatments (ie: MUSE) and can be a simple solution to a complex problem.
